Firsts – Review

At first, I was completely unsure about this good. I mean, it sounded good and like something I would totally read. In the end, I was right. It was super good. And it was something I would normally read. Firsts has an HEA, which is always a plus. (If you haven’t noticed, I’m a huge fan. 😉 )

Anyway, there were times when I thought Mercedes was a complete bitch. However, there were also times when I felt bad for her, and only wished things would go her way.

Check out the blurb from Goodreads:

Seventeen-year-old Mercedes Ayres has an open-door policy when it comes to her bedroom, but only if the guy fulfills a specific criteria: he has to be a virgin. Mercedes lets the boys get their awkward, fumbling first times over with, and all she asks in return is that they give their girlfriends the perfect first time- the kind Mercedes never had herself.

Keeping what goes on in her bedroom a secret has been easy- so far. Her absentee mother isn’t home nearly enough to know about Mercedes’ extracurricular activities, and her uber-religious best friend, Angela, won’t even say the word “sex” until she gets married. But Mercedes doesn’t bank on Angela’s boyfriend finding out about her services and wanting a turn- or on Zach, who likes her for who she is instead of what she can do in bed.

When Mercedes’ perfect system falls apart, she has to find a way to salvage her reputation and figure out where her heart really belongs in the process. Funny, smart, and true-to-life, FIRSTS is a one-of-a-kind young adult novel about growing up.

MY REVIEW

See, that sounds pretty good, right?

One thing I really liked about this book was Faye. She was pretty badass.

Moving on. Ok, so while I did enjoy this book, parts of it bugged me. Which is why I couldn’t rate it a 5. At points, I hated Mercedes. As someone who has been cheated on, I know how all those other girls feel. I mean, come on. How can you think having sex with someone else’s boyfriend is helping them? It’s not like Mercedes even wanted them for herself. She wanted to help them be non-virgins, so that they could have a good first time with their girlfriends. Except, what she didn’t realize was that you only get one first time. Once you give it away, that’s it. You can’t take it back. Those girlfriends thought they were with virgins. But they weren’t! So her thought process was out there.

But… I do like how she handled everything and that she had Faye and Zach to lean on. Even if it took her ages to realize it.

Firsts was definitely unique and I liked it because of that. The characters felt real and well-thought. Even if I did spend half the book saying, “What in the actual fuck, Mercedes?” — Sorry for the language. But it’s true!

It was surprising in all the right ways, and really made you think twice about doing some of the things the characters do. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

Great review! I’ve heard a lot of nasty stuff about the main character though. HAHAHA.

Thanks! I have too, but I definitely enjoyed the book. 🙂

  2. Great review! I looooooved this read; Mercedes was a bit problematic, especially at the beginning, but I actually adored her from the start and I love how much growing she did by the end. Thanks so much for sharing!
