Fun In The Sun – Creative Writing Prompt
I haven’t done a writing prompt in a while so here goes:
Write about an adventure.
It was barely ten in the morning, and it was as hot as the Arizona desert in the summer, without water. Slipping off her shorts, she slathered on sunblock in hopes it would protect her olive skin. The strings of her light blue bikini danced around as her hands moved up and down her legs, coating every inch. She moved to her arms, then her stomach, and finally reaching her neck and face. The only thing she needed left was someone to cover her back, but there was no one she knew. Tossing her head upward, the sky looked daring and open, with no clouds in sight. The day was only going to get hotter as the hours wore on. Sitting back in the chair, she slid on her flip flops, trying to figure out where to start.
A huge three colored water slide was calling to her as she looked at the adventures that lay ahead of her. She might as well head toward the line before it got too much longer. It was already halfway down the four flights of stairs that descended from the top of the slides. She hoped the wait wouldn’t be too long, she could not wait for the cool water to swallow her up.
Ding! Ding! Ding! The bell startled Joanna as the line started to move closer to the slide. She glanced at her watch, wondering how much longer her best friend, Julie, would be. It was her idea to come on such a hot day. They needed a break from the summer semester at the local college and were in dire need of fun. Inching her way forward to the front of the line, someone knocked into her from behind. “Hey!”
“Sorry.” he tilted his head around. “Wow, your green eyes sparkle like emeralds in a glass case.”
“My, you’re good with words, aren’t you?” She laughed.
Giving her his famous tilted smile, “You don’t know the half of it.”
She rolled her eyes and saw the line moving once again; only one flight left to go.
“Unfortunately. My bestie is running late, as usual. No biggie.” She shrugged, intrigued with the guy who noticed her eyes first. Her eyes are not the first thing a guy notices.
He turned to the couple kissing behind him and winked. “I’ll see you guys later.”
“Really, it’s not a big deal, she does this all the time. Go have fun with your friends, besides, I don’t even know your name.”
“Luke. May I call you Miss Emerald Eyes?”
Laughing, she stuck her hand out. “Joanna, and no, please don’t.” He took her hand and his body froze, inch by inch, until every strand of hair on his body stood in place.
“Uh, are you ok?” She took her hand from his.
“What? Oh, sure.” He blinked a few times, and his body started to slowly melt. “What was that?”
Before she could answer, a voice interrupted her.
“Next up!” They had made it to the front of the line. “You guys together?”
They looked at each other and shrugged. “Why not?” Joanna said, smiling. “This should be fun.”
The employee of the park told them to hold hands as they slid down the slide, and to not let go, no matter the circumstances. Luke simply smiled and said, “Well… I guess you’re mine.”
They climbed over the railing of the slide. Once in the water, Joanna shivered. From the coldness of the water or because of Luke, she will never know. The employee spoke to them once more before he gave them a small push, “Hold on tight!”
They descended down the slide, screaming and laughing as she fell on top of him during a turn. The slide ended shortly after that and plunged them into a pool of water. Upon resurfacing from the pool, she tried to let go of Luke’s hand and walked away. He pulled her back and said, “I said you were mine. Where you going, babe?” Winking, he walked in the other direction, pulling her with him.
Laughing, she pointed to a ride she wanted to try but without Julie, she did not meet the person requirement. “Let’s go!”
Hope you guys enjoyed! Let me know what you think in the comments below!
