Review – Dirty Ugly Toy
I know, I know. ANOTHER review for a K. Webster book. Okay, LISTEN LINDA, K. Webster is great. She always challenges the reader to go past what they would typically think is normal behavior. Wait, what? Yes…I said that correctly. Her books teeter on what is right and wrong. Most of her characters act in ways that make us uncomfortable. Basically, her characters are fucked up in the head. There, I said it.
Please keep in mind, this book touches on really dark sexual fantasies and it does teeter on what is right and wrong. These characters are messed up in the head, but they are messed up in the head together and if you finish through to the end, you will see an ending that will make the hard parts worth reading.
The story follows a sex addict who purchases “toys” for his sexual amusement. He pays large sums of money for them to cater to his sexual fantasies for 6 months. Here is the thing that annoyed me. For the first half of this book, I couldn’t help but feel like this was a deleted scene from 50 Shades of Grey. It resembled the book a little too close for my liking. Now, I have only read the first 50 Shades book, so I don’t know about the rest of the story but the first part of Dirty Ugly Toy definitely had some inspiration from the every popular Grey books.
Because some of the details were so similar, it almost annoyed me. I kept thinking “Woah, this is almost exactly the same, that’s not cool” and I still kinda feel that way, even after finishing it. However, the rest of the story was completely different, so I was able to overlook those little similarities.
The characters in this story are disturbed. They come from troubled pasts and in turn, develop this weird connection with each other that honestly looks insane to the outside world.
Nonetheless, this was an interesting read. I don’t want to give too much away, but I definitely encourage you to have an open mind and read it.
K. Webster likes to create characters that make us confused, worried, anxious and honestly make us wonder what the heck is going on in her head. However, that is what makes her stories so great. They are different than anything I have read and I appreciate that!
Her time is over.
Things are looking up.
She’s dirty and ugly.
He’s wicked but handsome.
Six months to toy with her.
Six months of vacation and a ton of money.
I’ll hurt her beyond repair.
I’ve been through much worse.
She’s difficult to control and doesn’t obey.
I’m done submitting to anyone or anything in this life.
I should hate her.
I should hate him.
The game has changed.
I will win.
Dirty Ugly Toy is a novel that blurs the lines of right and wrong, deals with abuse, contains dubious consent, and adult subject matter. If you are sensitive to violent sexual situations, the book may not be suitable for you. Some parts of this book are not easy to read and are not intended for everyone. However, those that keep an open mind and stick with it will not be disappointed.
